Healthy Lifestyles on Referral
What Impact has Healthy Lifestyles on referral had on our community?
The Healthy Lifestyles on Referral programme at Active Lifestyle Centres has been a fantastic support system for people across South Gloucestershire dealing with physical and mental health challenges. Getting active can boost the quality of life for those with ongoing health issues and individuals in recovery alongside taking some pressure off our national health services.
The Healthy Lifestyles on Referral scheme is available across all our Active Lifestyle Centre locations, offering an array of activities dedicated to enhancing the physical activity of those who need it the most. The programme works through health professionals referring individuals with long-term conditions for specialised support through physical activity.
Some of the individuals who are referred to the programme suffer from such conditions as diabetes, cancer, those recovering from joint replacement surgery, anxiety or depression and cardiovascular disease. These types of conditions can make it daunting and difficult to remain active in daily life. Still, with the help of our healthy lifestyle specialists, participants in the programme can return to active independence, an improved quality of life, and prevent further health risks.
The Healthy Lifestyles on Referral programme goes beyond just offering access to traditional physical activity such as swimming or the gym. We provide classes specially designed for individuals living with conditions like arthritis, lung issues, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s.
Our partnership with health professionals and local councils, has led to new activities such as BioCircuit and BodyTone studios being introduced. These facilities have been created to cater to individuals with specific health needs and rehabilitation requirements. Our goal is to create a supportive and welcoming space where anyone, no matter their health issues, can get on the path to better health and well-being.
The Social Value of Physical and Mental Health Intervention Programmes
The Trust’s Health Intervention Programmes have made a real impact on the well-being of residents across South Gloucestershire dealing with persistent health issues or injuries. Using a Social Value Calculator (developed by Experian, Sheffield Hallam University and 4Global*), we can now monetise the social value created by participation in exercise. The value of Active Lifestyle physical and mental health intervention programmes in the last fiscal year equated to £3.3 million! This value is worked out from reduced healthcare costs, fewer ongoing health problems, and less need for GP visits and therapy sessions.
Jim Rollo, Active Centres Healthy Lifestyle manager, expresses his enthusiasm, “We are thrilled to witness the transformative impact of the Healthy Lifestyles Initiative on our community. Our unwavering commitment to promoting physical and mental wellness, nurturing social connections, and delivering measurable social value has propelled us into a leadership role in community-driven health initiatives.”
